Our Approach
|
We don't believe in systems / styles / arts, but in the individual. We don't study systems, we study exceptional teachers' approaches. We don't pick and choose the “best techniques” from various styles. Instead, we focus on that portion which coincides in all the systems we study. The shared elements, the universal principles. This common area, is our pool of information. A distinction is made, between ego and real self-defence situations. Walking away, is the best option, but only if you have the opportunity. Pre-contact phase is thoroughly examined. Most altercations can be avoided if the awareness level is high and if verbal skills are adequate enough in order to de-escalate a situation. So, emphasis is given honing those skills. Environmental awareness, situational profiling and analyzing, peripheral vision, exit points, footwork, improvised weapons, spotting multiple assailants and hidden weapons are just some of the things practiced. The approach is based on principles, strategy and tactics, not techniques. We believe in the delivery system. We modify anything that works better for us, but only after a thorough study. Not because of some dogma, but because we tested it, in a difficult environment, under pressure. Using progressive resistance methods. When adrenaline is rushing and fear comes to play; only gross-motor skills can be used. So, over-complicated stuff is out. The safest and simplest tactics are used. We rarely use closed fists. Instead, palm strikes of every kind are preferred. Elbows, low-line kicks and takedowns are key elements in our arsenal. Only the safest, simplest, fastest way possible in a given situation is what we use. We train everywhere. With everyday clothes, on all types of terrain. We try not to be confined by the limitations of styles and systems. We try to find solutions for given problems. We don’t use set techniques. Techniques are produced on the spot. As the situation arises. Principles are discussed and we customize the training to the individual. All non-multiple opponent exercises, are designed to involve none the less, a 3rd person. You must never fall into the psychology of exchanging blows. The bigger, fitter, stronger, always have an advantage. We never fight our opponent’s game. We impose our own. Real situations include weapons, fear, unknown elements, surprises, multiple opponents, adrenaline, tunnel vision, intent. You learn how to fight without any limitation, any rules, anything that can hold you back. We always expect the adversaries to be armed. Everything is about speed, power, timing, footwork, accuracy. The best defence, is offence. We move and fight the same way when fighting empty-handed, or armed, so we keep things simple. Anything we have in our hand is translated as an improvised weapon. There is only one goal: Return home safe. (by Nikos Voyages)
